I have not used the email or secure messaging much at all, and have told my nurse not to email any patient anything because of being non HIPAA compliant if you email any PHI. (sorry, I don't want to be insulting) but just explaining my rationale.
I have instructed my nurse only e-messaging allowed is through the portal in a secure fashion.
However, I think you can email thru Updox by inviting by fax or email an invitation, and if accepted then the e-messaging if password protected is then secure--so in that sense you can send and receive email--but double check with charlie to make sure this is right.
