@Brian, He isn't talking about saving it anywhere like to your desktop. He means a button that you push at the top of the note while you are writing that saves the data as if it had been forwarded to your inbox.
I guess I have reached the point where I no longer understand the value of having an additional "save" feature, if you can't lose your data by losing your connection, as you and Adam say.
That being said, here's everything I know about "saving" a file in AC. Perhaps somebody will find it useful.
Ctrl-S. If you hit Ctrl-S, it saves your current file to the Inbox. Yes, it closes the note. It takes one second to pop it open again. When you open it, it asks you if you want to delete the note in your Inbox. If you say no, your saved note will stay there until you delete it later. If you say yes, it is still available under deleted items. Unfortunately, this feature has a bug, and it sometimes does not save the Social History. If this feature worked properly, it would be the quickest way to save and retrieve a note.
Alt-C. Forwarding the file to yourself is much more reliable, and it is not that much trouble. Using the mouse, it is a lot slower than just hitting Ctrl-S as above, but it is pretty fast using keyboard shortcuts, as Bert pointed out to me once. At least in my case, I hit Alt-C, and hit up arrow once and hit return. I can then re-open it, and the deleted version is available in deleted items.
LastNoteBackup.txt As you write up a patient encounter, Amazing Charts silently backs up the current note to a file called LastNoteBackup.txt which is located in the Amazing Charts folder on the computer on which you are working. This will allow you to rescue data in the event you accidentally closed the chart before saving the note. You can open this text document with Microsoft Word, Wordpad, or Notepad, or another word processing program. Once open, you can cut and paste the text into the applicable text boxes in the patient's chart.
In addition, Amazing Charts tracks when a note is saved correctly, so that if your computer crashes while you are documenting, the next time you start Amazing Charts, you'll be notified that a note wasn't completed correctly. In this instance, you can open back the note and Forward or Save it.
Keep in mind that the lastnotebackup and resurrecting a note backups are erased once you start to work on a new chart, so you must access it before working on another patient!
