A few weeks ago, I asked a nurse about an odd round reddish scar that had appeared on my leg amidst all the other marks of the surgeon's trade.

"Ringworm?" I joked.

No, the nurse was quite clear and reassuring, probably a mark from an external fixator that pressed into the skin.

Or something,

But not ringworm--how would ringworm appear out of nowhere in a skilled nursing facility?

Today a new nurse took one look at it and said, "Ringworm." She'd had it in high school and knows what it looks like.
