Here's a bit of SNL trivia. Chevy Chase, who used to write for the Smothers Brother's Comedy Hour, was hired as head writer for SNL. He and Lorne Michaels became good buddies and, because Chase really wanted to act, Michaels cast him preferrentially in the "Weekend Update" segment and, well, you know the rest of the story. shocked
