In my development experience, I've see critical bugs arise in code that I went no where even remotely close too. Inexplicable.
I have the same experience. It is amazing how many places a section of code can be used that I have totally forgotten about, and that suddenly don't work because I "fixed" something. Worse, they often don't show up for weeks or months because that part of the program only runs every once in a while, like quarterly billing. Much better the devil you know than the ones you don't.
