I have. Going too fast can cause a program to seem like it crashed when you don't wait long enough. I've done with VMWare workstation when I'm trying to run several VMs simultaneously :P It seems like it crashed, but it just needs time to respond.

You should have him replicate the issue in front of you and perhaps we can offer a better suggestion. SSD sounds like a nice upgrade for him.
