Not sure if this would work but upgrade to Service Pack 3.
See if there are any programs hogging the RAM, and if possible either delete them or turn them off.
My older Dells with Pentium 4 chips (not dual core) did not do well with the upgrade. Also, go to the Dell site and make sure all your computer's drivers are up to date.
