I am not a typist either, and I could not have used an EMR without Dragon. I have been using the Medical version since 2007. It is increasingly faster and more accurate with each new version. Dragon & I can "type" 80 wpm on average.

I consider it the most essential piece of software in my office. (I am a fan of the software, less so of Nuance, who I think overcharges MDs for their version, and without justification limits EMR use to the most costly version).

No, it can be trained to an individual voice within 20 minutes. The technique of dictating is simply speaking clearly, and the punctuation and corrections can be learned during the practice session.

Having good hardware is important. I used the headset mike that comes in the Dragon package for a few months, but I found that a better mike makes a good deal of difference in accuracy. Always use USB mikes. The faster computer, the more satisfied you will be. I was using an Intel Core2 Duo with Win 7 Pro and 4 GB RAM for years with good speed. But the improvement now with an Intel i5, 10 GB RAM, SSD is remarkable.
