Good suggestions, but I think we are making this way too hard. At the end of the day Friday, he had AlL of his data on the server. Tried a backup and the server rebooted. You should be able to reboot the server 50 times and still have your databases intact.
So at that point ALL of his data was on the server. I am not sure why he put a new database with data without Friday on it. But, all he has to do is either print the new notes from Saturday and import or what I would do is to simply re-enter those Saturday notes into the server. Then as Jon stated, delete the laptop database.
Then look into why the server rebooted. Look at the event logs.
