I think it is reasonable that a vendor not just put a blanket price on the board. Most "software" companies charge based on users, computers, locations, etc - we are just very lucky that AC only has a set fee based on providers. I don't think bashing Jeff is really the answer.
I happen to use NewCrop because it is the one Jon offered first, but that does not mean we shouldn't look at other options. Many companies do not put their price on a website, but ask for some basic information before giving out the information.
