Since AC won't scale to work in a 500 bed hospital , we (I am CMIO) are looking at Cerner Powerchart and Epic (will have to move off Seimens Soarian as they were purchased by Cerner).
I am looking to my colleagues who truly know a physician friendly EMR to get opinions about those two suspects.
We have a few new medical staff members or locums hospitalists who for the most part "like" Epic better, without being able to quantify why.
If you have used either (or, especially both) in the inpatient setting, please fire away.

Epic has a well deserved reputation for being "Cream of the Cra_"

I use it in the hospital, it's a cluttered mess but better than the rest? Just turn the card/password/rsa threshold down some. My hospital has me swiping and passwording every 2 seconds - even if i just signed an order on the same pt 5 seconds ago - drives me nuts. The other hostpial in town has removed cards and rsa and only uses security questions - better say most of the docs using it. Also dedicate enough VM resources to make it kind of snappy - don't go with the bare minimum, slowness is maddening.

My local hospital uses PowerChart. We still can dictate on our patients so I can't comment much on the actual note-generating function, but the times I've used it it was very unwieldy with a bunch of drop-down boxes.

I hated it when the hospital first went to it but I have to say it has improved where order entry is now quite a bit easier and seems more intuitive.

I am using Epic in an outpatient setting....hate it. Busy, click,click,click.....not intuitive, especially after using AC.

I have been using Cerner Powerchart in the hospital for a few years now.
It continues to improve but overall works well with templates and customization. The Dragon dictation is also improving.
I complain about it but when trying to take care of a patient without the EHR is really a drag (down for upgrade or waiting to have patient entered into the system)
