If you want to upgrade to Windows 8.1, it's best to have a good procedure for the process. IT Companies go through a whole checklist before performing a systems upgrade. Here's a few:
1. Does the current machine have the necessary drivers for Windows 8/8.1? OEM computers like Dell/Lenovo are unlikely to add driver support for newer OS if the computer is old. Custom-built PC's will likely have driver updates available through the motherboard maker (e.g. Gigabyte, Asus, etc.)
2. Do the drivers exist for the peripherals? This was a big one for people switching from XP to 7. A lot of people went with 64 bit Windows instead of 32 and found later 64 bit drivers didn't exist for their printers and scanners.
3. Decide if an in-place upgrade or full reformat is appropriate. If you're switching from a 32 bit to 64 bit architecture, your only choice is to reformat. Also consider if your hardware meets the necessary specifications.
