With most of the codes, one has to type the first three or four letters anyway.
Here's another pet peeve of mine, related to the ICD-9 search.
If you want to make that search feature truly handy, you need to do two things:

Leave out the non-standard abbreviations. It makes it wicked difficult to search for diagnoses.

Allow the search routine to search for words out of order, such that you could actually search for Variant Asthma Cough, or Cough Variant Asthma, or whatever, and come up with the right diagnosis.
