No brainer. Ditch the two computers and buy new ones with WIN 7 Pro. I haven't tried WIN 8, although I have 10 licenses. I would likely want touchscreens.
What is going on with the SQL. Haven't heard. I could log in. Maybe fix it again. Or Raja. But, you need to do one or the other.
