This depends on what you ultimately do? This is another good reason to go with a client/server domain, although it can be on a non domain as well.

If you are just doing local clients without a network setup, then I would go with AVG. They have a free version. I would stay away from Symantec or McAfee.

If you are looking for something to run on an actual server, so basically a server or enterprise solution, then I would DEFINITELY NOT use Symantec. I absolutely despise Symantec anything but especially their antivirus software.

Personally, for a network solution, I would recommend either Trend Micro or AVG.
