The problem with analogies is they are just that; they are not perfect comparisons.
Most people do try to get jobs. Most people do try to better themselves. But, when there is no incentive to have to do things on your own, then it is less likely you will.
I know a person who was offered a substantial amount of money for some software he wrote. He turned it down, because he would lose his Section 8 housing. Now please understand, that is not inherently bad. It is what it is. The section 8 housing is there, he can keep it if he stays under a certain income, so he does. Looking at it logically, there is no reason to increase your income if in the end you lose.
I have people tell me quite frequently that they looked at a job, but if they got it they would lose their Medicaid. Again, I am not judging them, just commenting on the system.
