Hi,
I am tired of all the complexities of using a server at the office and I loss my Tech guy. Does anyone have experience using Windows 7 pro or Windows 10 as the main computer for AC with wireless connection to other work stations ? Is it slower ? Is it "less safe" etc.?

Hi,
I use Win 7 Ultimate ( as I have encrypted my HD with bit locker , win 7 pro does not have bit locker encryption ) as my main server with win 8.1 on client computers - works well with no problems

Using Win7 Pro or Ultimate as a main computer will work fine. If you are installing fresh, install the 64bit version of the OS.

I would also recommend at least 16G RAM.

Wireless connections are slower - they just are.

Wireless is fine if you use solid encryption (e.g. WPA2)

This late in the game, I would recommend going with Windows 10 Pro. Windows 7 will be end-of-life January 2020.

I think the greatest advice anyone can give to another user is to run a wired network.

I would guess the vast majority of users don't use a server OS.

Yup. Wired - if at ALL possible - especially if you don't want to have speed complaints - and Win 7 or 10 is fine.

Not a bad idea, but that's 3 years from now and almost a generation cycle in the computer world. By the end of support they may be ready for a new "server."

I have a few issues with Win 10, but then I had a few issues with Win 7, it's really what you're used to. That is why I would agree it's not a bad idea. Especially since you are talking the same money. This group are more likely more comfortable with 7 than 10 however.

Absolutely wired with a gigabit switch. The difference in speed is significant as well as lower footprint for hacking.
