I have mostly a wired network with peer to peer hosting amazing charts on a main computer.
i am using windows 7
I do connect one and sometimes two laptops to a wireless network.
everything is password protected
i am using a bright house modem that connects to my netgear router - hard wired and wireless.
the connection is DHCP
I am concerned about hippa security - and i think i am not there yet.

I am looking for advice how to upgrade my system to make it hippa secure.

[the router has a WPS wizard] - do i need to figure out the WPS setup.

could i keep the same as i have, and use a laptop without any conficential information saved to it and connect to my amazing charts through log-me-in and have that secure?

thanks

Since the all the tech superstars on the Board have real lives, and a probably are out surfing, clubbing, etc., I'll give this a shot:

There is a lot of technical stuff out there. Just google "HIPAA & WLAN".

My non-techie understanding of basic WiFi security is:
1. secure the physical location of the wireless access point/router and all the wireless devices,
2. WPA2 authentication and strong passwords for the router, and required for any wireless device to connect,
3. a password protected EMR (ie: AC), and
4. train your staff on data security.

Unless you do the above, you aren't any safer connecting via LogMeIn when you are within your office WiFi network. You can still get unauthorized access. LogMeIn has this document answering HIPAA concerns, in case you want to connect over the internet from home, Starbucks, etc.

Ryanjo is pretty much on the money.

And I don't surf or club. I just got back from Atlanta at a Microsoft conference (I live in Wilmington, NC).

Yes, I rode my Harley.
