I wanted to make sure you guys saw this:

http://amazingcharts.com/company/blog/post/accessing-your-ehr-data-is-easier-than-you-think/

I fully support Amazing Charts in their decision to be open like this. I also fully support their stance on the matter. If you want read-only access, knock yourself out. However, if you want read/write, then yes that is something you should be required to give Amazing Charts assurances that you can do without blowing your own foot off with a shotgun.

With read-only access you can use Microsoft Access to make some pretty cool, albeit somewhat basic, custom reports. If you really want to kick [censored], you can buy a copy of SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition and use SQL Server Reporting Services. You could then also interface the Amazing Charts front desk scheduler with Televox House Calls, or whatever calling service you have, and do patient reminders. Again, be sure whomever you have doing the work for you in the database knows what they are doing.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact me or Amazing Charts support.

I consider this a major win for the end user. Thank you, Amazing Charts.

Guess you will need to be more specific as to the link or I am rather stupid. Can't find the specific article.

It takes you to the blog page, but it is empty. There are links, but I am too stupid to figure it out. You, on the other hand, are much brighter. You are the master of SSMS.

It looks like the post has been deleted. It was the top one you would see today if you just went to the blog main page.

I think this is hugely important. As previously mentioned, we had major issues with missing labs that required a great deal of effort to locate. I should have been able to do this myself, and believe I could if I had full access to the database.
I am of the opinion that it is MY data, not AC's, and I should have unrestricted access to it. I do understand that if I mess it up, the cost and hassle of cleaning it up is on me. But, that's why we have a thing called a "backup."

This is what I could retrieve

How to get your data for portability and reporting
More and more practices ? or third parties connected to those practices ? are asking for direct access to their Amazing Charts databases.? In the vast majority of cases, they need a SQL password to create unique reports for quality measures, payers, or government mandates.? In very rare instances, it?s because the provider wants to switch to a different EHR and needs take their data with them.

Amazing Charts has always supported open data portability and reporting. ?The process for requesting a read-only SQL password is simple.? The Amazing Charts license holder must make a request from our Client Services group, or give a third party written permission to make the request.? We simply ask that all parties sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). ??

Read-write access is more complicated because we need to protect people from themselves.? Unless you are a certified SQL expert, it is all too easy to make changes to your database that will cause catastrophic failure.? We vet these requests more carefully to ensure the practice has the right IT resources in place, and then we work closely, hand-in-hand with the practice?s IT resource to get the request completed.

Why Amazing Charts is different from other EHR companies ? we don?t hold data hostage
There is a buzz phrase?in the provider community: ?Holding EHR data hostage.? ?In these horror stories, a practice wants to stop using an EHR, and the vendor will not give them access to their own patient medical data. ?Adding insult to injury, many EHR companies will demand that the practice pay a ?data access fee? of thousands of dollars.? This is essentially holding your data hostage until you pay a ?ransom.? ?

A recent conversation with a medical biller, who works with hundreds of practices using dozens of EHR systems, was even scarier.? He said that providers using Practice Fusion and other cloud-based EHRs had no access to their data whatever when they decided to stop using it.? And there was absolutely nothing they could do about it.?

Amazing Charts has never and will never ?hold practice data hostage.? If a practice, for whatever reason, decides to switch to another EHR vendor, Amazing Charts works with the practice to help them securely take their patient records with them.? That is our pledge to you.??

Perhaps that statement was already corrected, as they stated they will give read write permission is they are sure "you won't blow you foot off."
