I am not sure I am on the right board but am trying to find on AC where to go to print the patient education. I saw it a while back, but we were not using it, now want to and I can't for the life of me find where I found it before. Can someone help?

Hi Gina

Patient education is found by clicking "Write Orders" then select Patient Ed. You can add your own documents.

Thanks Marty. There was a website that popped up when I "found" the education a couple months ago and you could search for what you needed... but this would be good too cause do have some educational stuff we want to add.

At the bottom of the Orders/Patient Ed you will find 2 boxes one is uptodate for patient ed info and the other is AAFP, clicking on these will take you to websites where you can download pt. education.

I tried this when I first added some patient handouts but I found it too time-consuming and "clicky" Instead I went through many of the handout on the sites, as well as WebMd and picked several regarding my most common encounters. I copied and pasted them in to a folder on my Paperport Desktop. They are in alphabetical order and are very easy to find.With 2 clicks and can find and print out any one I choose.

I do like Leslie, my wife typed up some education material--low chol/low trig diet, advance directives, alcohol use, exercise, diabetic diet CHO counting,--so when i do my HM, I add that I will send through the secure portal with my summary note I send patient, and my nurse knows which one to attach with summary. This sometimes gets a bit laborious so this weekend we are going to work on putting the material on my portal website so the patients can access the educational material themselves--jimmie

I don't think this is tracked by meaningful use, I am providing information over the secure portal discussed during the office visit. I am trying to get my nurse to create as many secure patient portals as possible, as the information transfer is much more efficient and timely with less paper involved via the portal. jimmie

For MU credit, you check the box on the encounter that says "Patient Education Given".

You can scan in the up to date patient ed document and import it into patient documents so that you will be able to then print it with just a couple of clicks inside AC, in side the patient's chart.

I think I understand your question now DoctorMel--If a patient has a secure portal I am printing patient ed from my template sections, and attaching to the summary of office visit,and send electronically. If not I print up through up to date in AC/or print up from template section in Updox and give to patient at time of visit--in both scenarios I click the "patient ed given" box to track meaningful use. jimmie

I just realized one other slight advantage of utilizing the secure portal --often times I am not quite finished with my note when the patient leaves the office, so if a patient has a secure portal i am more inclined to send them a summary every time, when I send them patient ed, whereas they may just get the patient ed without the summary if they don't have a portal. jimmie

I think it is cumbersome...I just simply have a filebox with the handouts and give them what i need to. i hit the "patient education" key and type in what i gave them.

As for MU, we aren't gonna get paid for it anyway, so who cares.

I don't use the Patient education through AC. We have a folder on the server where I keep all patient education materials. There's a shortcut to that folder on every PC in our office. It's much easier to print from here than it is to go through AC.
I just document what handouts I give to the patients.

That is a great idea...you should send us the folder..that would be cool!

We do like Marty does. I have never really seen the advantage of storing the documents within AC, as opposed to in an easily accessible folder on the server.

The only advantage of having a document in AC is that when you print it, AC automatically checks off the patient education given button and inserts a line in the plan about which document you gave.

I like to use www.mayoclinic.com. They have comprehensive overview articles designed for lay-people. very well written and easily understood. They are also extremely comprehensive and print in a format that translates to a printer very easily.

No I don't import these into AC, I suppose I could. For example it's frankly easier to google "mayoclinic.com irritable bowel syndrome" and it brings me right to the site so I can print the article in a click or two.

I have handouts for my most common problems scanned onto the Paperport desktop, in the "Patient Handouts" folder. When I want to give one to a patient I click on the document, click print, go back to AC, check the "Patient Education" box and I am finished.
