(of Mars) is out today. The trailers look like great CG stuff.
I know, this has nothing to do with AC, but I was a great fan in my college (and since then) days of this series of novels by ER Burroughs (Tarzan fame).
SO which side are you on: (saw an other-BB were the participants were arguing these points)

ERB is one of the founding fathers of Modern SciFi (along with HG Wells and Jules Verne) and Lucas (Star Wars) and Cameron (Avatar) borrowed heavily from ERB,
or
The movie is a "rip off" of Avatar and Star Wars?

Me: I'm going on opening day!

I have read (in the public relations blitz that builds before these big budget movies open) that this was shopped around as a movie long before Avatar or Star Wars. Bob Clampett (of "Looney Tunes") wanted to do an animated version in the 1930's. according to Wikipedia.

There was a REALLY cheezy movie ("A Princess of Mars", title of book 1) released straight to DVD in 2009 or 08. Wasn't worth the rental.

Personally, I am holding out for The Hunger Games.

Well, Roger, the trailers might look good, but the critics are not pleased. I suspect at this point the producers would be happy with a mention in the same breath as Avatar and Star Wars. It is the Battlefield Earth comparisons they are worried about.

I almost always like what the critics hate, and vice versa.
My read of the reviews makes me think you have to know some of the story to enjoy. That dosen't bode well for commercial success.
Turns out I can't make it today.

OK, for the 1 or 2 of you who might care . . .
Took my wife. We saw it in 2D.
She enjoyed it inspite of her initial reluctance.
They did a good job of recreating the Barsoom of my imagination (and book covers).
Major rewrite of the Therns (who appear in book 2) to a strange group of bad guys (almost unintilligble as to why, other than titalation for a follow up film that probably won't happen.)
Did I like it, yes. Not as enthusiaticly as LOTR, but a only mildly distant 2nd for the fantasy genre.
May go back for 3D, more likely buy the eventual 3D BRD

How is BR 3D? I have not heard much about it, had the impression it was anticipated to be pretty ephemeral.

Don't know, but got a TV recently that (LG 54 in) happened to be 3D (happened: was good price in the size range)
Got a 3D capable BRD Player,
Alas, no glasses or 3D disks yet.

My research into 3D is to stay with 2D for the foreseeable future if not longer.

I have to say I love the critics. If you go to IMDB and see the list of like 200 or whatever, you can find ones that think like you and kind of use them as a guide. James Bernadelli is very good. One thing about his is when he refers to other movies they are links and you end up chalking one movie off your list and adding five. smile
