So although v6 appears to be in the last steps of beta testing, I decided to give it a shot on a laptop that is not a domain machine on our network. Since the file structure appears to be different, I'm wondering how I should go about copying our 5.0.29 databases over to this version 6 install. The databases do not need to be synced, so I'm OK with running the database tuner on this machine to get it running as a somewhat live demo.

I tried to use the importer tool, but it's not looking for .xml files apparently. Any ideas?

If it is the same as previous, I would run a backup - then move that file to the test machine. Then restore onto the test machine. You'll also need to run the database tuner IIRC.

Curious on your take once you have had a chance to put it through it's paces.

I would do as Indy recommended.

One word of caution. I would disconnect the test machine from the system so you don't accidently tune the MAIN database.

mkweiss, V6 will run on <2G but probably needs at least one.

Wendell, thank your for pointing that out - I should have included that.

Sometimes it is overkill, but a good habit to physically disconnect to remind yourself that what you are doing has ramifications.

In similar fashion, the tools that we roll for machines suspected of being infected are all on a USB drive, and we treat the machine like a bio-hazard - disconnect from the internal network, if you need pipe for something we have a special RED cable for an outside the firewall connection; everything but putting on a fresh set of latex gloves.

The physical informing the mental, if you will.

Thanks for the suggestions, I haven't joined the test machine to our domain so I don't run the risk of running the v6 database tuner on our v5.029 database before we're ready to migrate.

I'll copy the entire backup to a flash drive and see if I can restore it to the v6 install. The only concern is whether it will restore without the database tuner being run on that 5.029 data...I'll update this thread in case anyone else is trying something similar with v6.

I successfully installed V6 over V5.029 on a test desktop PC but when I use the database tuner the PC crashes and there is a blue screen with a Fatal Error message. The PC only has 750 MB of RAM and this may be the cause of the crash. After all the anticipation of this version I am disappointed to read about problems users are reporting on other threads. I will follow Bert's lead and wait until AC can provide a stable version.

I know they have been in the process of moving into a new facility. As with any major move such as this, there is always the possibility that things won't go completely smoothly. My phones and internet "go out" all the time....nothing I can do but ask my patients to bear with me. They seem to understand.
