Can anyone point me to a list of document types that will show a preview once they have been imported into AC?

I have imported word documents, and those don't show a preview, just a box asking if I want to open the file when I click on it.

I'd love to be able to convert my word files into a format that can be previewed after importation.

Thanks.

There are several tools that allow you to convert .doc[x] files to .pdf, some of which are free.

I'd recommend OpenOffice, as it is free, has a one-button save-to-pdf, and does not impose the 'ribbon from Hell".

As Wendell says, "Did I mention that it is FREE?"

I know how to convert between formats, what I need is a list of formats that will preview, preferably natively, once imported into AC.

I have tested pdf files, but was hoping for something that didn't need another program (like acrobat reader) to preview in AC.

I am not entirely sure what you are looking for.
I have pdf's and Word files in my imported items. When I click on them, they open in the pane on the right hand side. I understand that they use a pdf reader and Word to do so, but what is the difference? Is there some additional preview that you are looking for?

I checked with AC Support, and the two file types that they claim to support are .jpg and .pdf

I'm not a big fan of Reader as it requires patching as often as the MS OS these days, but I have tried a faster/leaner PDF reader (SumatraPDF) and AC doesn't recognize/use the file-type association.

JBS,

I don't get a preview of a word file in the screen to the right. I get a message asking me if I want to open the document. The only file format I have gotten to work is pdf, and that requires Acrobat Reader be installed (which I hate, there are much better pdf readers out there, never mind that on my current system Reader causes my Dragon Naturally Speaking to crash).

So maybe it's because I'm using Word 2007, and AC only works with earlier versions? Or maybe, like Indy states, it's because AC only supports .jpg and .pdf.

I also get the "Open document in application" window when I open Imported Items with a .doc ending. I only can read PDFs in the Imported Items pane.

Sorry, I was just kidding. I was referring to v6.5 of AC.

I remember at some point early on seeing the message that I needed to open those docs in their native program, but now I don't have to. Like I said, pdf's, Word files, even Excel spreadsheets open right up in the AC viewing pane. I am trying to remember if I (or my in house tech expert) did something to make that possible. I will think about it....does anyone else know how to make this happen?

So it looks like the first time I open a document-type in Imported Items, it asks which program it wants to use to open the file. I select the appropriate one (this works for Word, Excel, and pdf files, at least). I then get a dialog box asking if I want to always use that program for that file type. If I click "yes", from then on those file types open instantly. This occurs in any patient's chart, and even if the program (Word, etc.) is not open.
