Has anyone considered building a wiki-style video tutorial library using a free screen recording program, a microphone, and an online video host?

There are the few videos on the Amazing Charts website, but these don't cover the ins and outs of the software. We're just now trying it out, but to help the staff with our AC implementation, we are creating screen recordings (accompanied by audio commentary) showing how to use AC beyond the basics (and for some, the basics).

Armed with Camstudio 2.0 (free screen recording software with optional audio /visual captions) and a dictation microphone, AC users could compile a comprehensive library of how-to's.

There is the complication of finding a way to share and organize a lot of large files. In our case, the tutorials are stored on the server, and a free cataloging program called "Miro" is installed on each computer to organize, search for, and view the videos.

If anyone is interested, I will look into finding a free online host to share the videos we create.

I, for one, would be terribly grateful. I agree the available online tutorials leave a lot to be desired.

If anyone has requests for tutorials I'll be happy to add them to my list. While I can't promise an immediate turn around, any videos you may request will ultimately help our own staff, so I have no problem tacking on a few more.

We also have a decent PC-Fax setup using a modified version of Leslie's Paperport methods. This means while most of our tutorials just involve AC, a good deal also include using Paperport and integrating it with AC use. So if there are any requests for Paperport, lets hear 'em.

All you would need to do is post the videos to Youtube.com

I agree, that is a good option. With the number of tutorials we are generating though, it would serve us well to have the files isolated from the general "You Tube population" I'll call it. This is mostly so that searching and finding the tutorial you want is easier. Is there a way to create a library within youtube? I do not have much experience with it.

**perhaps we could create an Amazing Charts channel?

When you have an account on Youtube, your ID can have its own "playlists" or grouping of videos that you have created. I would create one for the AC videos only so they aren't mixed up with your own personal ones. To help with search, all you would need to do is title the video "Amazing Charts Tutorial: Chapter 1, Adding a Patient". Then, when someone enters a search into google or youtube for Amazing Charts, your video will come up first. I just checked...no one has done this yet so this is a very good idea. You may even be able to generate some advertising revenue if enough people view the videos.

Also, Youtube channels are fine but not well supported. Playlists are simpler. I created a Youtube channel for a community website but it is now difficult to add videos to the channel that aren't created by yourself. Good idea but not implemented well to date.

Looks like "blip.tv" is the best website for free video hosting. I'm in the process of uploading all of our video tutorials to my blip account. Once I'm done I'll post the url here, if anyone is interested. It will be something like ACtutorials.blip.tv.

I agree, but what exactly do you feel the current tutorials lack that you desire?

The tutorials would be primarily for beginners just starting to implement AC, and those who lack intermmediate computer skills, namely staff. However, videos for more complicated tasks would benefit the physicians in our office as well (e.g. working with interfaces). These two were made last night in a matter of a few minutes:

-transfering an incorrectly imported file from one patient's chart to another
-importing a fax or file into AC
-scheduling

Our staff is building their basic understanding of computers as we go along. While these tasks may seem simple to some, having a video vs. a brief paragraph on the AC website helps them to understand what they are doing on a whole other level.

Still working on screen recordings. Getting a core group of videos online may spark some interest/demystify the screen recording process for other interested users.

I imagine this library being a combination of both basic tasks in Amazing Charts, but more of a trouble shooting library, than anything else.

With that in mind, does anyone have any suggestions? Be very specific.

Here is the Master List:
e-prescribing
medical home
meaningful use and PQRI.
