Current automotive concern- leaking oil pump seal on one of my kids' cars, 1997 Subaru 2.2. Oil pump is behind the timing belt, which is probably due anyway, and it'a a good idea to change tensoner/idlers/water pump as well. So current concerns- do it myself? Use aftermarket or Subaru parts (Sooby parts very $$$$).
On what other board would spam lead to this discussion??

I have had good success with third-party JP parts.
As to do it/farm it, it depends on allowable down-time, skilled mechanic you trust availability, and relational value. One of the pictures on the wall I prize is my daughters and I in our grubbies as we re-do the front-end of the engine on a 280Z.
Looking forward to taking a few days later this year and swapping the engine and tranny on our trusty 94 "Burb with a relative who has a mobile repair business. It will be fun; mainly because he will see to it that we succeed, and I look forward to working with him.
So, if your kid is up to helping, I'd set aside some time to do it.
