Jimmie,
Current automotive concern- leaking oil pump seal on one of my kids' cars, 1997 Subaru 2.2. Oil pump is behind the timing belt, which is probably due anyway, and it'a a good idea to change tensoner/idlers/water pump as well. So current concerns- do it myself? Use aftermarket or Subaru parts (Sooby parts very $$$$).
On what other board would spam lead to this discussion??

I had an '82 Subaru and used a lot of aftermarket parts on it, but never replaced the timing belt (actually replaced the entire engine at one point), a friend gave me his car when it rusted out and it became my spare parts department. Not sure how much different the 97 is from the 82, it is the same engine but a lot different pollution and stuff. Mine was still normally aspirated at that time.
Timing belt? see how much difference in price. If not huge THAT may be worth going with Subaru. Not sure if that engine has clearance or will will wreck the valves if the timing belt goes.
Anyway, I did do a water pump in the 82 and it was straight forward as I remember (That was about 20 years ago) It was aftermarket and ran for couple years until I sold the car.
