Proposals for geographic diversity, proximity to airports, exciting (and usually warm) vacation destinations, and cruises are bandied about. After lots of brainstorming, Jon B swoops in and says "I need to have extensive equipment and staff at the event, and so logistical and cost considerations mandate a conference in Providence". Exceptions are the initial ACUC and smaller, regional conference(s) planned entirely by users.
I would never presume to speak for Jon B, and he may feel differently now, but I thought some historical perspective was in order.

Yea I mentioned that about the equipment. I've never been to ACUC, but I've seen the equipment being used from the facebook photos. Several desktops and monitors. I don't think it'd be very practical to fly all of that out.
