Yes, most patients probably don't realize that email isn't HIPAA compliant, but for those who do, they may freak out a little if you refer to email at all. I would definitely recommend referring to it as "secure messaging through the portal" or something like that.
So would the best terminology to use with my patients be secure messaging through the portal rather than emailing in the portal--as email connotes non HIPAA compliance?
