I find it rather hard to do, because the "fix" seems to happen no matter what. And, maybe I am misunderstanding your question. But, if my receptionist adds a patient, and I then "back out" of the patient in the patient list, the new patient will show up. I wasn't able to try it with no patient in the list, but you may have to begin typing the name, then back all the way out so ALL patients are now present. I don't think you have to restart AC.
At the very worst, you would only have to log off and then log back on.
