I am concerned after discussions with some current users that access will only allow 5 in/out users and that my goal of having multiple users accessing AC at once will make the program crash no matter how upscale my computers are. I am also told that excessive scanned documents will make backup impractical. I take numerous pictures of my patients pathology and take pictures of all x-rays. I estimate that each file will have at least on average 20 scanned pictues and x-rays, CT, MRI etc. Could someone more computer savy than me address this topic?

I can't address the 5 simultaneous user issue. But I do hope it is not true.

As far as excessive scanned documents, this is a matter of the amount of time it will take to copy the files to another source for backup. It should be a problem with any EMR (or anything else you want to back up). It takes time to transmit the data to a different pc or external drive. The more data, the more time it will take. But you seem like you have ALOT of pictures that you want to scan in. It sounds like you might need to have a separate system for storing high-quality images (I know you don't want to hear that).

I can't believe that 5 in/out - unless it means at the same split second - we have 7 computer running amazing charts in my clinic - all with a seperate person on it. We are not all opening or saving notes at the exact same millisecond - but we certainly function quite well. As for backup - you can backup anything you want - it is simply a matter of size of the backup file and transfer time to your backup media. I backup to a "thumb drive" but if I had much more imported data - I would have to consider some other medium.

I don't know about Amazing Charts user limitation, but number of simultaneous users can be limited by the type of software you use. If you have pier-to-pier network and have Windows XP Home edition installed on your main computer, it will only allow 5 simultaneous users connected to the main computer at the same time. If you have pier-to-pier network and have Windows XP Professional edition installed on your main computer, it will allow 10 simultaneous users connected to the main computer at the same time.

Another potential user number limit comes up if you use Windows Server operating system - your server license limits the number of simultaneous reads/writes. Most small networks are set up with just the standard 5 user licenses. Adding another 5 or more isn't much harder than sending money to MS.

Apricot: I didnt know that! Thanks. Guess I'm lucky I insisted on XP Pro instead of Home when we got these things.

I have three exam room, one biller, one transcriptionist, one front desk, two nurses and myself using AC simultaneously (that's nine). Usually no problems. That's with XP Pro 10cals.

When I had a peer to peer network, had seven on simultaneously without problems.

The problems I do have is with virus scanning and servier backup running simultaneously. Virus scanning needs to be disabled for certain files less likely to be at risk (such as amazingchart database, and other programs) or else it would eat up memory and casue a network slowdown or crash.
