Dear All,
After 13 years with AC--grateful ones--I will be joining our hospital group next January. They use Epic. Any tips on data migration?
In addition I want to keep files for myself. I read about the service that JamesNT offers to convert all files to pdf which I might do as a backup. I use AC in the Cloud so keeping AC on a server at home isn't an option.
Thanks! John

James' solution seems to be the most reasonable and usable for the future. But why, if you are joining a hospital system? they should be taking over your records as part of the deal.

@Chris,
Many hospitals will not convert data. Or, they will import data only if presented in a certain format.
Hard to believe, I know.

That's why I said it should be part of the sign on with the hospital. Make it part of the deal that the hospital becomes the custodian of record. I guess it just depends on negotiations.

@Chris,
it's also the matter that many facilities do not have that kind of talent on hand. I forgot to mention that. Just because a place is a hospital doesn't mean their IT is bad [censored].

Part of the certification that AC claims from the governmental bodies requires that they produce files that can be imported by other EMR's as part of HIPPA. When I went to a new chart system and exported records from AC, I uploaded them to the government website for interoperability. The files did NOT pass the test for importation into other chart systems. So for instance, AC can say they are ONC certified, but not actually be compatible. The whole point of these certifications and the HIPPA law is not just privacy, but EMR record PORTABILITY. Now AC wants 1000 dollars to keep my chart system updates so I can keep accessing them on the new .Net framework, but the only reason I need this is because of the problem above.
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) Health IT Certification Program (Certification Program) is a voluntary certification program established by the ONC to provide for the certification of health IT. Requirements for certification are established by standards, implementation specifications and certification criteria adopted by the Secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Certification Program supports the availability of certified health IT for its encouraged and required use under other federal, state and private programs. The Certification Program is run as a third-party product conformity assessment scheme for health information technology (health IT) based on the principles of the International Standards Organization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) framework.
