Just got it installed on my Microsoft Surface Pro 3.

I'm in love. Hopelessly, helplessly.

In. Love.

Just got Ubu 15 installed on one of my dev machines.

It's in, it's on, I'm back to work. No love, but then I'm just cold-hearted.

@JBS,

Hopefully, my Surface running Windows 10 won't find out I'm cheating on it with my bike.

I'm jaded atm; I'd rather get a few hours off and go sailing than play with new tech. Once we get through this release cycle, I'll get a break.

And when they both catch up to the systemic security and stability of Linux releases, then I'll break out the popcorn.

Meanwhile I'll keep running on systems that go months and years without restarts. whistle

Yeah, I'm not falling for the bait.

The old OS wars are meaningless now. OSX, Windows, and the varies *nix serve their purposes and have their advocates/detractors. It all depends on what you're doing.

I have my reasons for being in the Microsoft camp and that's where I'll stay.

James, you are welcome to camp where you like. I will note that I have seen lots of Hogs in town the last couple of days. I suspect that it is close to Sturgis time.

I have all three of those OSs in house, and I use them all in different circumstances.

Other than my PS4, Windows is still the best platform for games.

Right tool for the right job.

Did the upgrade on my Surface pro 2 last night, all my programs/apps transferred over without apparent hitch now to bring it to the office and see how it plays with the network and AC. On the other hand planning to leave all the desktops on Win 7 Pro. 'Early Adopter/Lite'

And to Indy's point, it is indeed Sturgis time. I encourage everyone to look out for motorcycles of all types when on the road. You'll see quite a few of them on the way to Sturgis.

Indeed, the Sturgis Effect is already taken hold. I'm having to explain to a friend of mine, a 56 year old attractive male who is a self made millionaire, why posting a picture of himself on Facebook with his arms around two females who can't possibly be older than 38 may be a cause for concern to his 61 year old wife who is back home here in North Carolina.

That man is my hero.

About sl-o-o-o-ow AC version 8 -- any indications that upgrading to Win 10 will help?

Upgrading to Windows 10 will not help with this issue. The issue with AC is how it handles connections to SQL Server, caching, etc.

At the recent Ad Board meeting, an AC user described the following:
Upon upgrading to Windows 10 on a computer running AC, both AC and SQL express were removed (deleted) from his machine.
I have no idea if this was a unique event, but I thought I should post this cautionary tale here. You might not yet want to upgrade to Win 10 on a machine running AC in your practice... at least not on a Sunday night.

I updated to Windows 10 on my surface pro 2 (client) no database went from 8.1 to 10 after reboot AC was still on the desktop and connected to the server database without an hitch, I'm in peer to peer server is a Windows 7 Pro. Sounds like not upgrading Windows 7 machines for a 'while' is prudent.

Just to add my 2 bits on my Windows 10 upgrade....

I updated the machine I run my AC 8.2.2 client on. I didn't touch my peer to peer "server" which is running Win 7 Pro. Immediately, I noticed a huge slowdown in performance on the client whereas previously, there were no real issues with response time. Patient charts are taking 20 seconds or so to load and close just on the Windows 10 machine. Tried a number of things to improve the performance with little luck. Just as an aside, a strange issue presented itself when I tried to run AC as administrator. I made the change in the program properties and it then couldn't find any mapped network drive. I changed it back and it worked fine again. I have never seen that happen before under Win 7.

I came across this from the blog "HISTalk" and thought it was worth reproducing here:

"My love-hate affair with Windows 10 continues after one of its silent updates trashed my laptop?s Wi-Fi connectivity yesterday due to what I initially thought was device driver incompatibility. I spent a couple of hours trying to fix it before giving up and taking it to the repair shop (which I?ve never had to do since I can usually fix things myself). The shop owner left a message last night saying he had spent hours of analysis without figuring out a solution, with the only option he could suggest being to downgrade back to Windows 8.1. I returned his call this morning and he had experienced some sort of nocturnal epiphany and fixed the update-corrupted Windows networking components by matching up individual DLLs with versions and dates and then reinstalling and registering them one at a time. It?s back on my desk working fine. The $89 cost was worth it and I?m pretty happy to keep Win10, although I?m annoyed at the exasperation and expense of fixing the damage it caused and fearing the havoc the next update will wreak. The repair shop owner has added my problem to his Win10 issues folder, which is rather thick after just two weeks of its availability. He?s probably thrilled at the business uptick."
(bolding added by me)

I've been doing a bit of research regarding some of the more bizarre issues surrounding Win10. It seems most of the issues involve the upgrade. Im just curious what a clean install would do instead of having to port over all the previous registry garbage from the old install. Has anyone heard pf a c;ean install causing these issues?

I've only done the upgrade on my Surface Pro 2 and also did install the latest patches, no problems as have been reported ? if coming from Windows Pro 8.1 made a difference?

I did an upgrade on my laptop and home and it effectively killed it. I can't log on. It says my password is invalid. I've tried things on the windows 10 forums to no avail. MS said to change my Microsoft Account password and then try it. That did not work.

I fear I'm going to lose all my data.

Can't you roll back to your prior OS (ie Windows 7)? If I restart with a cold boot, I get the choice to restart either Win 7 or Win 10.

Did you do a backup of your OS prior to doing the upgrade? There are also a number of apps out there which have an .iso you can burn to a CD/DVD. You can then boot from the CD and change your username and password. If you need any of them, I have a few favorites.

That is if John's much easier way doesn't work for you.

Well. no. It kind of happened like this.

I was relaxing around 11 PM with a 2nd (or 3rd) glass of wine when this impulse came over me something moved my hand and made me click on the upgrade. (embarrassing. I know better).

I did try to make a boot USB but I was unable to change my password. That would be useful...if I could make a boot USB (or CD) using this laptop and use to to change my username and password.

Not sure what John means by a cold reboot. I did reboot with some options and tried to roll back but it didn't work.

When I tried to change my password using the USB I did make using the Windows 10 media maker, it said "ok, input your old password" (which it says is incorrect.)

As far as the cold reboot, I think John just means restarting and, during startup you should see the option for win 7. I don't know because all of my win 10s are clean installs. You can make a password recovery disk from another computer do you have a WIN PE. My problem is I have too many. Off the top of my head, Windows Geek is good. I will look at my password discs tomorrow. I don't think all is lost.

I was the one at the AC Advisory Board meeting that had the issue pop up. The night before the meeting, I opted to install Windows 10 on my laptop and the next morning, AC was gone.

For the most part, the Windows 10 updates have been ok for me. Where there was an error in installing and I had to do a repair installation or recovery, I did run into the issue of things including AC being removed from the system and needing to be re-installed. But the very first installation on the laptop didn't have an initial problem with the Windows 10 install before it erased AC (along with other programs, including Adobe Acrobat reader).

So the caveat is, like always, back up, back up, back up. smile

@Wayne

So, I haven't tried any of these with Windows 10, but you can give them a shot. There are quite a few of them if you Google them. They aren't all straightforward unless you have had three glasses of wine. Not even sure they can fix them. Some just clear the password. Some allow you to make a new password from within the bootup disk. And, some allow you to make a new user and password, which would seem like the best bet if you have an issue.

Method 1

Method 2

Method 3

Well, good luck. You really should give those a try. I would strongly think that the data is there. I guess the other way to go would be to take it to a reputable computer shop. But, then it wouldn't be as much fun.

As Bert says, after installing Win 10, you still have the old operating system retained (labeled windows.old in the files). Shut down your computer by turning it off (press and hold the power button on the computer case itself, if needed). When you push the power button again, you should eventually arrive at a window that looks like this:
