hello , I would really like some help from the tech gurus especially Sandeep ( as you are microsoft certified ) for this problem . I recently updated from win 7 home to win 8 pro after the install, it tried to do updates and found 175 of them it downloads most of them with the exception of an Intel driver R7 series data storage controller , installs them but cannot configure the updates- it stops at 99% configuration and then error - " failure to configure updates reverting back " which takes many hours - and always stops configuring them at 99% I have done the following - 1. Ran automatic repair option with no success 2. Turned off all MS services and disabled all other services prior to downloading 3. Ran windows fix it tool which says it has fixed problems , and windows update agent -No success 4. Ran anti virus and malware bytes no viruses found 5. Unchecked the Intel R 7 series data storage controlled SATA AHCI driver update that would refuse to install and tried to re install the updates with same error 6. Tried to use DISM .exe Scanhealth and restore health commands as recommended by others with no success 7. Re installed win 8 twice with no errors during installation
8. made sure I activated windows 8 9. made sure that back ground intelligence win update and work station were set to automatic these are all the fixes which worked for others on the internet
I am at my wits end with this Apart from upgrading to win 8.1 I see no other option can anyone please help thanks bala

I would answer, but I am not Sandeep. You could always call Microsoft.

But, until you get hold of either one of them, have you tried installing maybe 30 at a time starting with the security and critical updates. If there is a service pack, start with it. If you don't need the Intel driver R7 series, right-click on it and select "hide." No harm done to try all 175 at this stage, but I would recommend never trying to install that many updates after the computer has been in production. I have never seen a virus do something like this. If you really want to fix these kinds of issues quickly, just use www.experts-exchange.com.They will get back to you quickly and generally fix the problem.

But, until you get hold of either one of them... That's unnecessary. You got it. That's exactly what I would suggest. If you're updating in bulk. Do all the security updates first. I like to sort by size. Anything over 20-30MB, I like to install separately. This will also help you isolate which update is causing the problem. Also, skip the optional updates for now. Also, I would strongly suggest skipping any drivers provided by Windows Update. Always best to get them from the manufacturer's website.

thanks a lot Bert and Sandeep, I will implement your suggestions . I did try getting the driver update from Intel , but their driver update utility tool states that it is a generic Dell driver and Dell is not being very helpful with this update so I am just going to exclude it for now and try to install the others a little at a time as you suggested also do you know if going to 8.1 may solve this issue long term? Understand that it comes with a lot of updates pre installed thanks Bala

Assuming you have tried your computer manufacturer's website for your specific system's drivers I would suggest the following. What I do with missing drivers is run devmgmt.msc and find out what device/device driver the computer is missing, if any (I would do this before you upgrade to 8.1 if you were able to restore back to W7). Get the missing device's hardware ID from the details Tab. It reads something like PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C22&SUBSYS_05851028&REV_04 Use the VEN and DEV numbers to see if it is listed on PCIdatabase.com TIP: You have to search by either VEN or DEV first and then match with the other in the search results. Use your discretion if the link doesn't seem appropriate (i.e. you have a dell computer and the link is to Lenovo's website), but usually they are. See if that driver fixes the missing driver error in devmgmt.msc.
Like Sandeep said, I have never found Windows update to find/install an appropriate driver for anything. IMO Windows update is for windows updates and not device drivers. I hide all the Intel drivers it suggests.
I've also never found Intel's Driver Utility to find missing Intel drivers correctly...which is bewildering.
I'd say that if you can find the missing driver on W7 and then upgrade to W8 or 8.1 and then check that W8/8.1 doesn't identify the same missing driver in devmgmt.msc you should be set long term.
If I remember correctly there might be a W8 compatibility checker for your computer's system you could check beforehand. Or maybe that was a W7 upgrade tool.
Disclaimer: I am also not Sandeep

Those are all good suggestions. But, the issue he is having is that Windows doesn't seem to finish the installation of the updates. It shouldn't matter if he is or is not installing the optional ones. Once the installation finishes and the computer reboots, the updates should be configured and done.
Definitely upgrade to 8.1. Much better than plain 8.0. But, once you are going to install again, just install 20 or so at a time. This will help with troubleshooting. If they install correctly, you will know it is either the fact that you are installing too many at a time or that there is just one update that is hanging. You will never figure that out unless you do a few at a time.
