After speaking to a pharmacist, he tells me that we can now prescribe schedule II drugs electronically, IF our system is equipped. Therefore, can we prescribe narcotics using AC prescribing?

My understanding is that AC is not ready to ePrescribe controlled substances.

I thought that they had posted that they would release a version to do so in December. So much for my thinking (so far, anyway). Since this is to be a New York State requirement beginning March 27 2015 I do hope they get this completed.

I am also in NYS and will need to prescribe narcotics electronically by March 27, 2015. I have started to discuss this with patients so that they can make other arrangements if necessary. Weird that this is mandatory rigid requirement as I understand it. Hope the hospital emergency rooms are ready. Anyone have news on this? I have heard that it will be very cumbersome process. Nancy

It is a rigid requirement. Its probably a heavy handed attempt to further prevent fraudulent prescriptions for narcotics. You can't really steal an electronic Rx.

although I occasionally have doubts, there really are a few more left leaning states than New York

With double authentication, e-Rx for such drugs would only make it more time-consuming. I also practice in the PRMA. Scheduled rx got more tedious this month here in Massachusetts. The state now has a mandatory requirement that before writing a new prescriptions for any scheduled rx (opiates, benzos, etc) we must look up the patient's prescription history on the state database--a tedious process.

NYS has that law also.

In NYS we have had to check a state database prior to any controlled substance prescription for almost 2 years now.

We must electronically prescribe all narcotics by March 27, 2015. Apparently writing a paper script will be a crime of some sort. At least that is how it was presented at recent med staff meeting. Not sure what this will involve.

Just chatted with support at AC. Was told that e-prescribing of controlled substances will be available by March 27, 2015. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I hope it isn't going to use the text system.
