I have a public folder on one comuter running vista. this folder has about 6000 pdf small files, and growing. The folder has information generated by Phreesia.
I need to access this folder from my different computers from my window 7 running computers, I notice that the folder opens up quickly, and if the folder is left open, new files populate in alphabetical order automatically.
From my xp computers, when I open the folder, I would get a searchlight for [I just timed it} 45 seconds. If I leave the folder open, new files are added according to the age of the file at the back end of the folder, rather than inserted alphabetically like windows 7.
Does anyone have a fix for this 'problem', or this is just the way it needs to be with the xp operating system?

I don't know if this helps, but I had problems with large file transfers between Win 7 and Win XP. What worked was to set each computer's network card speed to 100Mbps/Half Duplex. I tried "Auto", 100Mbps/Full Duplex, 10Mbps at both Half and Full Duplex with no success. The computers are connected to a 100Mbps switch/router. I haven't noticed any side effects with the Half Duplex.
If I recall correctly, the slow transfer was in only one direction, and may have also have been affected by which computer "pulled" files from the other computer, or which computer "pushed" files to the other computer. Unfortunatly I don't remember the details.
Also, please note that I'm not running AC on these computers.

This is not a transfer speed issue. Windows 7 and Vista have extensive indexing that occurs. Windows XP has indexing but it's not nearly as robust as the newer versions of Windows. That's why you can search from the start menu in Vista and beyond. I would recommend installing Windows Search 4.0 for XP. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23It should learn the folders you use most. But you can manually modify the index by going to Control Panel -> Indexing Options -> Click the Modify button Add your network folder.

Thank you Sandeep, Windows search 4 for xp did the trick.
while I was installing the windows search 4, I also chose to install the: Microsoft? Windows? Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830); and the Windows? Defender
I am now having second thoughts - Do you think that I should keep these programs running in the background

You're welcome.
It's fine. You may want to disable Windows Defender if you already have an existing anti-spyware solution. The other one is fine.
