Currently our doc goes in to see patients with a clipboard with their records on it. We would like to send the doc in with a tablet to see patients, so that she has her AC notes, labs, and other outside records, etc. on hand when seeing the patient. This would be great, since it would mean that staff don't need to print out a whole bunch of stuff for a patient visit ---then proceed to throw it away--- an hour later.

Does anyone know if this is a possibility?

Is AC too robust for a tablet?

If it is possible, what type of system requirements would be needed to make it work?

Any advice from those that have tried a tablet?

Presently using a Motion Computing C5 tablet. Works well with AC.
10" screen (pen input), WiFi, Intel i3, 4Gb RAM, 120Gb HD, Win 7 Pro.
I use it as a wireless client of my main computer.

There are several ways that I know of that tablets are being used with AC, here are the two most typical:
<>Splashtop to access the Doctor's office computer - very useful for viewing the chart, or making some quick notes
<>use it to join an HTML5 session of the server instance - we turn this on for practices that want it in our managed environment. We did this yesterday for a practice that had freezing rain and blown down powerlines - they came in on a 3G iPad.

However, if someone is going to actually chart, they are going to want a larger tablet, or I would recommend considering a ChromeBook.

IMNSHO, the screen needs to be 12+ inches, have a keyboard, and a trackpad. AC is *very much* a mouse and keyboard program right now.

The Chromebook is $250, is almost instant-on when you open it, and will give you 5-7 hours on a charge. Our travel unit also has a 3G radio, but that ins't necessary for an office-based practice.

Wow. Thanks for the input. How would we configure the tablet to get onto our server? I mean, is that any more complicated than than accessing AC from our PCs and laptops?

Do any of you know if AC (the company) promotes or makes recommendations for tablet access? I would love a demonstration...:-)
Thx!

We tried using a tablet. We tried to use it as a tool to document encounters as they were happening. It didn't work for us. The screen was too small (it was 10.1", which the AC website says should work, but as Indy stated, if you're going to get a tablet, you'd be better off with 12"+), the response was sluggish, tapping the right buttons was too hard, and the battery life was only about 5 hours (in our experience, it's a wonderful thing if a single charge can last you the whole day, as it does with the laptop/cart setup the doctor now uses).

If you're set on using a tablet to document encounters, then I think a high-end tablet is a must. Like the one ryanjo uses. I also happen to agree with Indy, about AC being a mouse & keyboard program. Though that might be because I'm not familiar with the capabilities of advanced tablets.

If all you want to do is view documents, then I don't think you'll need as powerful of a device. I'd further investigate the two suggestions that Indy provided.

Accessing AC from a tablet shouldn't be any more difficult than accessing it from a PC/laptop.

However, remember that AC is a Windows program, so if you're going to install AC on a tablet, the tablet better have a Windows Operating System (OS). There is an istore app for AC, but I've never used it.

RDP apps work pretty well. Personally, I would use something with a keyboard. My personal favorite is the Lenovo X230T with the WACOM Digitizer. Pricey, but I like it. IMO, it has the best laptop keyboard even at just 12". Also has a digitizer (stylus) as well as multitouch.

If it is a PC tablet, the connection process is the same. For a Android/iOS tablet, different.

If you have a tablet, we can open a port and give you access to our demo environment, so that you can see how it looks. You can send me a private message, or use the contact form on our website.

I use an iPad with LogMeIn Ignition. Works well. Easy to carry from room to room. Unlike a netbook you can can increase the size of the window to see small print. Carrying a 14" laptop around would be cumbersome.

Interesting. I'm finding that 12"+ is the sweet spot for working with AC. People often report working 10.1" Android/iPad tablets is difficult. I've been wanting to try out the chrome book.
