Anyone planning on uninstalling java ?

Quote
Security advice for web users last week from the US Department of Homeland Security recommended that Java should be disabled, lest a growing number of exploits leave your computer open to hacking. ?Java vulnerabilities have been widely targeted by attackers, and new Java vulnerabilities are likely to be discovered? the US-CERT warned, and argued that users should ?consider disabling Java in web browsers until adequate updates are available.? Read on past the cut for cross-browser details as to how to do that.

What about updox?

I am not going to remove Java as too many programs and browsers depend on it. What does Java say? 3,000,000,000 computers use Java.

I just disabled Java in the browser. Just remoted in and e-faxed with an electronic signature to pharmacy and went through, and Updox is working fine. Also just e-scribed script to local pharmacy and no problems.

Have you tried completely uninstalling Java in Programs and Features?

If I don't have Java on my machine, I can't access Citrix to get into hospital.

No, did not uninstall Java, just disabled Java in the browser under security tab of the Java control panel. This is what Kim Komando recommended.

And you and her stayed at a Holiday Inn express right?

I found that java was already automatically disabled by Firefox, in my firefox browser. I manually disabled (actually switched it to "Prompt user" it in internet explorer). I'm keeping java on the machines however as i need it for updox, and probably other things too.

hmm, I did not know it was only a security flaw with java used in browsers. Would be nice to get an updox rep to comment. As of now there is nothing about it in their homepage.

Java is required to Sync with Amazing Charts. I don't know whether disabling Java in the browser will prevent Sync, but I'm not going to take a chance.

I just synced Updox with Java disabled, and no problem.
But, Kim Komando dated Bert once, so this advice may be tainted.

I agree with John. And, let's see....which do I feel safer with?

Disabling Java in my browser so I can't look up labs and x-rays on my patients? May as well delete Active X as well.

or

A homeland security whose job it is to protect the United States from terrorists and other groups planning to destroy the U.S. with weapons of mass destruction worrying about JAVA.

But, then again, I am sure there are many terrorists hacking into my computer to see how many patients have ear infections.

Isn't this better suited for ICE?

I once spoke with a computer expert with 15 years of security experience with a certain company. I was asking him about the security of my server and network from hackers. And here is his answer, and I have always remembered it:

Are there people out there that can hack into your server? Definitely.

Are there people out there who want to hack into your server? I doubt it.

It's sort of like a Denial of Service attack. Yes, someone capable of a Denial of Service attack could shut me down as long as they wanted. No more AC downloads. John would have to download it for me and mail it.

But, we tend to hear about DoS again GRC, Yahoo, Sun Microsystems, even Java. Because they get the headlines. I doubt you will read about a DoS against Bert or even AC.

Bert, you are too humble. Hundreds (or, well, dozens) who follow these posts would care if a hacker attacked your network.

I just looked up xrays and labs from my Hospital (Citrix too). No problem with Java disabled.

Just because you are looking up Citrix for your hospital doesn't mean you are also connecting with Cerner Millenium. Next thing you will tell me you use PowerChart. smile

The reason why you are confused is because I dated both of them. I wanted to learn computer stuff from Kim Komando but other stuff...from Kim Kardashian.

Thanks, David. Your alert is earlier than the automatic Java update download prompt (which I haven't received yet).

Popped up on my screen but unfortunately it had to be right when I was trying to get on Powerchart, which involves opening six web pages. The directions then made it rather difficult.

Not uninstalling Java, nor am I un-installing Infernal Explorer (AC depends on it).

We patch them both regularly, as well as Adobe. There are several attack surfaces in the Windows world, but you can mitigate most of them by NOT running as an Administrator account. Doing updates regularly helps, unless, of course, it is one of those updates that breaks other things.

Because Java installs much more discretely than certain programs, you can go to your programs list and un-install previous versions. This can be an important part of maintenance as some attacks are retro-grade attacks that stipulate previous versions.

In talking about Updox, there is the Java that runs inside of the browser [applet], and Java executables such as the one that runs the connector, or the newer Updox Central. Similar but different.

I think I heard Kim K was preggers, I'd insist on a paternity test.
