Hi everyone,
We have been using PaperPort instead of AC Imported Items for scanning documents. Why? Way way back in AC v2, we were having lots of problems with Imported Items, and we were not sure of the long term viability of AC. So everything that we imported was through PaperPort. We were using PP pro v 11, on a Win XP Pro PC.
Things were going well until several months ago. PP was locking up, so rather than try to fix an old program on an old PC, we got a new Win 7 Pro PC and PaperPort 14. (PP 11 was 32 bit only.)
And nothing went right since then. I took a walk on the wild side and tried Win 8, I did not like that at all. I am old and conservative and want a "Start" button. On Win 7,PP 14 has been problematic, slower than v11. Our scanner, an Epson GT-S50, does not seem to like its new 64 bit driver. I installed XP Mode and reinstalled PaperPort 11 in this, and it crashes frequently. Aaaaaarrrrrrgh!
Reviews of PaperPort show numerous users with similar problems, it seems that each newer version has more reports of problems. So it is not just us.
Two questions:
1. Is anyone successfully using PaperPort? Which version?
2. Is anyone else using anything else (beside AC Imported Items) to scan and save documents?
Thanks. Gene

Gene,
I am still using Paperport but version 9 on XP and W7 machines. I had tried the newer versions also and, like you, found they sucked. It still hangs up and crashes at times but I can put up with that because "It is free!"

Leslie,
Very timely discussion. I have stayed with PP 9 and love it. But, I am planning migration off XP on to Win7. I have just bought first Win7 Pro machine, 64 bit. Does PP 9 install natively, do you use XP mode, any advice?

Yes, it works. I got my copy when I bought a Brother MFC several years ago. Not sure you can even still find one but you may try Googling. Also, ask Wendell, he still uses Paperport I believe.

Leslie, So, I installed PP 9 on Win7 64 bit with no problem, except it could not install print drivers. That is, the virtual PP printers, print to PP. Did you find a mechanism for doing that?

Nope, that is one issue we have with the W7 machines...forgot to mention it. Although you can fax and print from PP on those machines you cannot always print to the PP desktop. But we have also had this problem with one of the XP machines as well. I just have not had the time to try and figure it out or to uninstall and reinstall the print drivers.

Thanks, Leslie, did not want recreate the wheel if you had solved it. I have started some investigation, and will post a solution if I find one. Apparently PP9 uses older Black Ice drivers which are not compatible with Win 7. It may be possible to buy a newer version. Or, I also have a copy of PP11 (came with the Brother), and apparently Brother may have updated drivers available, or a work around for V11. Although, I am reluctant to advance beyond PP 9 with all the reported problems in subsequent versions. Any of you tech wizards have any info or suggestions? Just don't ask us to give up our beloved Paperport!

When I installed PP on a new (at the time) machine quite a while ago I remember having to download a patch of some kind...think it was a driver patch
