What is happening with Linux and AC porting. In reviewing information on prior posts, it seemed to be working, but there were still some issues.
I also noted that Vinny seems to be the lead person. About six months ago you asked who might be interested.
So, how stable is it? How widely is it being used currently.
Getting a basic box and loading a GUI friendly linux varient seems smart and frugal.
Thus, what are the best linux varients to use, easily. What other software would we need (i.e wine).
What is the status of installer, last post I saw stated it took hours but a package could be rolled up.
I suspect this could be a popular option, especially with the cost and reliability factors, if more practices were aware of the options.
How "into" linux must you be to master installation and use? I might suspect that is the greatest trepidatiion in trying it?

I have had a custom build of AC running under Codeweaver's Crossover product. The installer doesn't run so it has to be build and installed manually. If you're interested I can put something together for you to play with.

I currently run Amazing Charts with my personal patch set from June of 2007. I'm going to be working on bringing my patches to the main Amazing Charts source tree (discussed some of these with Jon last week). The way I have the project set up is the same source code tree compiles for Linux under Crossover and for Windows, so both of my in-house versions are in sync.

It doesn't take a whole lot to install. You should know the basics, like how to download and install something, for example. Crossover is available as an "rpm" file for Red Hat, Mandriva, and some other flavors of linux that use the Redhat Package Manager system. Once Crossover is installed, you just unpack the Amazing Charts package (which I'll put together for you) and off you go.

There are a few limitations - one being that since Linux won't talk to the idiotic security dongle the EKG machine software doesn't work. No great loss, quite honestly. There are a few icons that don't quite render properly, but that's cosmetic. It interoperates well with our windows boxes.

There are screenshots available. Go to:

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=1455

The linux version isn't an official Amazing Charts release, although Jon is away and has been supportive of the effort. If there is interest, he's open to making an official Linux release available, which I'll build and maintain for them. In the mean time, though, Jon seems to be OK with me sharing the linux version if it's in sync with the generally released version, and if there's interest I'll put that together.

Regards,

V.

I would be interested in playing with it. I have not spent much time on linux in the past, but just loaded a machine (celeron 1200, 128Meg) with freespire, a ubuntu variant.
Would you recommend another variant? What other software, other than codeweaver would I need?
I don't know how much time I can devote to it, but it would be interesting to work with.

Nah.. Freespire is a good distro, although now **I'M** going to have to do my homework, as they're package manager is based on debian rather than red hat. No big deal, I've been meaning to play with Linspire / Freespire for a while now, and it'll give me an excuse to get a copy and play with it.

I was playing with Mandriva's "cooker" experimental stuff today, and started creating a build environment for Amazing Charts on it. Hopefully I'll have something for you to play with shortly.
