Hello, Can anybody give me in "simple layman's terms" on how to use Logmein to use AC from home? Do you need to have AC installed on the at home computer? Seriously, dumb it down for me I won't be offended. Thanks.

No, you don't need AC on your home computer. LogMeIn is a remote control software. What it basically does is send you a picture of your screen at work and sends your keyboard and mouse clicks to that computer at work. Basically, it's just sending you screen updates. All you have to do is make a LogMeIn account. On the work computer after you are logged in, click the "Add Computer" button at the top of the LogMeIn page. Next you download the program and then run it. After you finish the installation wizard, you'll see the logmein icon in the bottom right hand side of your screen. If you put your mouse over it, it should say enabled and online. Then when you go home. Go to logmein.com and login using your username and password. Click on your computer to Remote Control it. You'll be asked for the username and password or an access code that you specified in the installation wizard when you login to that specific computer. Then it's just like sitting on your computer at the office.
If it's not clear, I can make a tutorial.

It's as simple as: 1. go to LogMeIn.com from the computer you want to control (the office computer) 2. download the free version and install it on that computer (you can install it either as a "pro" version which will convert to the free after a month, or install as the free version off the bat) 3. create an account (this might come before #2) 4. link that installed application to that account (it takes you through the steps) 5. go on any other computer's web browser, go to LogMeIn, and log in on the right... on your page you will see all the computers you have installed the LMI onto linked to that account. 6. click on Remote Control on the one you've chosen, and log into it as if you were sitting in front of it.
You can have several/many computers linked to a login. You don't have to have LMI installed on the home computer... just go to the site on your browser. You can also remote in from an app on your phone (the app costs $20-25)
With the free version, you can't transfer files between computers... but that's where DropBox comes in... which is another invaluable software program. --- looks like Sandeep beat me to the response...hope they are both helpful

UPDATE: Wanted to let Sandeep and CJH know that I was able to use logmein last night and seems to work great. This will be very helpful for our providers when they are out of town or not in the office to check their messages and not have wait and come back to an overload of messages etc. Thanks again.

We have dedicated an older computer strictly for remotes, either remote desktop or logmein.

What are the advantages of using Log Me In over Remote Desktop Connection (RDC)? We have been using RDC flawlessly for remoting into our server from satellite offices to run AC over a VPN.

IPad RDP used to be not as good as LogMeIn ignition, so if you wanted to use iPad . . . RDP requires the RDP client on remote work station which may not always be enabled say in an Internet cafe, etc. LogMeIn uses a browser. File transfer is Much easier with LogMeIn On thin ice here, but I believe RDP requires a fixed IP , which some small offices may not have, LogMEIn does not. All in all, use what works for you. I use both.

LogMeIn does not seem to work well over a satellite ISP (for those of us who get REALLY rural sometimes) but LogMeIn ignition with I've iPad does. I have no idea why. I have not tried RDP.

ANY remote connection software has a problem with Satellite ISP: The host is expecting a continuous connection, which satellite technology is not (transmits packets in burst mode). That little fact is why I went 4 years without internet connection when we moved just 8 miles out of town. Now have an expensive but fast fixed wireless provider in the area. Your note in iPad Ignition is interesting. I may rethink my reticence about Satellite for our really remote vacation cabin.

Thanks Bert, a way around the no-fixed IP conundrum with RDP.
