There are many variations. I have tried a few different combos. When I am not in the office but still want to keep up with my mail, I do have them leave it in Updox because it is quicker for me, rather than going into AC through my VPN.

No, the doc does not need to be the one who triages documents, though you can be, if you prefer. I generally let the staff sort through them first. You can "sign off" and "mark up" either in Updox or in AC, but the process is a bit different in each. You can use the signature stamp in Updox to sign-off a document, but that seems pointless to me. In AC, the sign-off is not a signature or initials that you see on the document; it is an electronic sign-off that automatically occurs when you "sign-off" in AC, and is recorded there. By the same token, "mark ups" can be done in Updox or AC. In AC, they are not seen on the document itself; they are recorded as "comments" which you can add in the sign-off window of AC. It might sound complicated, but if you try it you will see that is not.

A.J.,

Been in practice 18 years and just started Updox just about a month ago--run a simple operation. 2 exam rooms and one nurse. I have 6 other partners just starting or soon to start AC. One partner has been using eclinical for several years. But we all use Lytec 11 for our practice management.
Updox has been nothing short of revolutionary for my practice, in combination with AC. Updox is mainly used as my receiving fax, but also used to get around the DEA antiquated regulation--ie eprescribe a Zpack but have to fax robitussin with codeine cough syrup. With a couple extra clicks, I updox codeine script to my nurse who then sends it via fax to pharmacy.
So in essence I have 2 primary users on Updox myself and my nurse who does all the legwork tagging and sending the faxes into my mailbox in AC which i then review and sign off. Or send out fax only scripts, and notes to other docs. I can view the Updox mailbox anytime and do anything my nurse can do but have chosen to relegate this leg work to her.
The other option Updox has provided is the portal option, which I am just starting to utilize. My wife has designed 3 forms--a demographic, prescription refill and appointment request that will hopefully reduce phone calls and essentially function as a voice mail, but the advantage will be that the messages can be incorporated into the record without my nurse listening to the phone message and typing it into the permanent record. Another function is that the current demographic data can be Updoxed by my 3rd user--one of my gals out front who sends my nurse the demographic data from Lytec (our practice management software).
The updox has intertwined the practice management software with the Lytec to the degree that has been extremely helpful, as well as act as my incoming and outcoming fax line and in addition the patient portal options as described.---hope this helps. jimmie

Concerning Updox--will it work with an internet fax service or do i need a regular fax and a land-line? Or do they basically provide an internet fax service?

Thanks Marty. A few years ago, we were early (or maybe just earlier) adopters of some things that are more and more common now. EMR, Patient Portal, eRx, online appointments and now I've added an internet fax. I'm evaluating the cost and usability of our hodgepodge of systems to see if I can reduce costs overall and maybe improve usability.

Our current patient portal basically does the secure messaging, eRx and Online Office Visits. But we now eRx from AC. Updox can do the secure messaging for us, and is integrated into AC unlike our current portal. While Updox doesnt' have the Online Consultations, we don't really do many of those. Updox sounds like it can take over the internet fax function (I'm using MyFax), but I only pay $10/month for that. Still it could be included in Updox and is one less system to log into and use and its $10/month that would go towards Updox.

Wayne,

How many faxes do you do a month (send/receive)?

Not really sure. The old hard-line fax out front still gets alot of stuff. Especially the junk from pharmacies, etc. I've so far been able to keep the internet fax number restricted to only other doctor's offices and 1 radiology clinic and patients. I send out on it though, so so far I'm doing less than 250 pages/month (combined send/receive). We get 500/month for the $10. I do understand the concept of "Overage Charges." I don't want all of those Rx requests from pharmacies coming in on my paid fax line. The question is "Can I avoid it?"

You can get 500 more faxes for another $10/month. I'm still getting faxes from the pharmacies but less now than before. Updox isn't for everyones needs but it works good for us. Free trial for two weeks.

Or you can keep your fax line and have them imported into UpDox. I believe JBS does it this way. You may want to PM him. That way you get the management interface and patient portal without having to buy fax bundles.

In order to make your posts about Updox more useful and more easily searchable in the future, we are trying to keep them somewhat limited to a single topic.
Please go here for a discussion of Updox pricing and how to reduce it.
