We have used desktops and flat screen monitors for five years. The monitors just sit on the table. Never had a problem, and we are pediatrics.

I have laptops sitting on movable kitchen butcher blocks. In 6 years being solo, a medical student dropped one on the floor, but it still works. And I dumped 900mL of water all over the other. Yes it was my Nalgene bottle of drinking water and yes it was sitting one inch away from the computer and yes I knocked my own hand into it and yes it died instantly. Amazingly though after drying it out for 24 hours it still works!!
So I would suggest mounting your flatscreen monitors on the very edge of a table so it teeter totters on the brink of falling off the edge. Then when a patient or staff knocks it off you can say "what kind of idiot are you!! You're a bull-in-a-china-shop, and you're fired!"
Haha, I'm obviously joking.
Unless you have 52" HD/Plasma monitors, I wouldn't worry too much about a relatively inexpensive monitor hitting the floor. I just might keep working like my laptops....

I have my laptops on old typewriter tables and sit on a stool behind them. I can move them around the room so that I am always facing the patient (although now with MU I can rarely maintain eye contact). I have started a new hobby of building furniture with 2X4s. Let me know if you want me to build you some rolling tables . I have never spilled water on my laptop but I did have to spend half a day getting almost a whole tube of KY jelly off the keyboard (long story).

Just like Leslie, I use an inexpensive laptop cart and rolling stool. It is pictured below. It is very lightweight and easy to roll to face patient whether they are in a chair or on the table. ![[Linked Image from ]](/ub/attachments/usergals/2011/12/full-2821-53-print_realspace_height_adjustable_mobile_laptop_cart_33_14_h_x_23_58_w_x_15_34_d_blacksilver_by_office_depot.jpg)

Glad to see JBS wading right into this one. We were able to locate some inexpensive TV/monitor brackets through Amazon - less than $20. The more expensive part is if you want the height of the monitor/keyboard to be adjustable on a wall track - still do-able, but that becomes fab-work.

Ok, ok.....I was getting ready to do a Pap and had moved the laptop table out of the way, next to the counter top upon which the "supplies" were laid out. Being the agile, petite, "float like a butterfly" gal that I am, I stepped around the table and counter to throw something in the garbage can. When I turned back around to head to my stool I caught my #10 foot on the table, launched myself forward towards the counter and broke my fall by slamming my hand down on an open tube of lube. The tube just happened to be facing the keyboard....it shot out a voluminous stream of KY which landed smack dab(actually quite a bit more than a dab) on the keyboard. The patient sat up and howled, I genuflected and thanked my lucky stars I did not break a hip, excused myself and the laptop from the room, deposited the slicky mess in my office and then went back to complete the Pap. While getting ready to do the bimanual and rectal exams, I told the patient I was sorry but I would have to do it without any lube. She looked up at me questioningly, we both laughed and still laugh about it several years later. I finally got the keyboard cleaned up but I still have a real problem keeping my fingers from slipping off.

Leslie - if nothing else your story brought a visual picture that made me laugh a bit......
You might consider wearing a helmet and football pads when doing pap smears.

Away from the pap smear stories for a second...i have something like what bert and someone else posted. They have a cheap one at walmart that works.
if you do want to mount the screens...i recommend it if you have the wear with all to do so, then i would go to monoprice.com all brackets and such and wires are SOOOOOOOO much cheaper then most places...and they are very very very high quality. and no i don't work for them and i don't get a cut...
as for the papsmear stories i have one that will just have you guys laughing on the floor! but as leslie said, not hte place to share lol..

Good suggestion with monoprice, Ketan. I literally just ordered a 1000 FT of CAT6 from them. Since they're in CA, it's flat rate overnight shipping Best prices on cables. I always love it when best buy pushes their $300 HDMI cable and these 2-5 dollar ones from monoprice are just as good. That said, they don't have as many features as the Ergotron, but the price is a 1/7 of an Ergotron LX arm.
