I finally found out how to merge two charts.
You know, when your staff did not find the patient and creates a new one, puts vitals forwards the chart, you chart and sign off, then discover the patient has another chart with several visits.
V6 has a way to combine the two.
Open the patient's new chart, go to demographics, Under the file menu (upper L hand corner) the last item in the dropdown is Merge this patient with another.
You then have to put in the administrator password.
This opens a box where you select the chart you are merging TO (this current one will be deactivated.) It shows you what will be kept in some of the key demographic fields (preference will be in the kept chart's data)
You click merge, this pops up an "are you sure, this is what is being merged" box.
Then a few seconds later voila, visits, vitals, icds, immunizations, probably all fields are merged, even import items. Very cool.
I now have the staff looking for this as we probably have about a dozen patients with dual charts but can't remember them until we bump into them.

Very cool. Also one of the tech support people advised to rename the inactivated chart from John Smith to John Dupsmith or xSmith. Not sure if it applies all the time, but something to do with x-link finding two of the same names with similar demographics.

Wendell, Did you know about the duplicate charts a while back? e.g. You noticed you had two of so and so, and you inactivated one, but don't remember the name? If so, could you search under inactive charts?

Because those that had no information are deactivated. Those that have perhaps one note get a yellow sticky stating "PT HAS 2 CHARTS, USE OTHER ONE" and it is kept activated so that the information can be accessed.
Thus there the inactivated ones do are not the ones to worry about.
