I have given out hundreds of fluvarix shots. Now that patients are coming back, I notice that in the decision support tab, influenza is still yellow so I am in danger of immunizing them a second time unless they remind me that, "doctor, didn't you already give me a flu shot?" Not only is this expensive as we don't get paid for a second immunization, it is potentially dangerous and definitely embarassing. I spent over an hour on the phone with tech support and finally was told this is a known bug. I asked, if it is a known bug, why did you just waste an hour of my time? I was told that tech support is not told of known bugs and the only way he found out about it was to talk to a level two person. I was finally told I must exit the most recent encounter, go to the summary sheet, go to the complete tab on the decision support section and see if influenza was given if I want to avoid double immunization and to have a nice day. Am I being unreasonable for thinking this sucks?

Yes, it is very inconvenient.

I discovered that the flu vaccine rule does not work early on in my flu vaccinations this year. I am doing exactly what you said, checking the summary sheet at the outset of visit, or more often my secretary checks it first in our PM program when the patient arrives to tell me if they need it. Luckily flu vaccination goes on for a limited time, and hopefully it will be fixed by next year's vaccinations.

I have started re-recording my flu shots under as Fluarix instead of Afluria (previous post should have read Afluria) and AC does what we paid it to do with that brand. AC allows me to enter CSL as manufacturer and I can put in correct expiration date, etc and change the date given to when I actually administered flu shot. My attorney says this will likely not result in a malpractice suit even though it appears that on the same day I gave 2 flu shots. It's bush league.

Could you give more detail, DJW? When I add Afluria, it adds and shows up in decision support? But, I don't do the vaccine entries generally, so maybe I am doing something wrong?

In decision support, influenza shows up in yellow. I double click and it takes me to the vaccine entry screen. I record the shot (afluria) with date, location, amount, lot# etc and click save and close. The next time I open the patient's chart, there is influenza in the decision support in yellow, and is currently due telling me the last vaccine was given last year or never or 6 years ago but it never recognizes the shot I gave at the previous visit. So I have to ignore this and go to the summary page as noted on previous post.
