We currently have version 5.0.29 hosted on a "main" computer networked to our office PCs, but also use a paper chart to house all the labs, consult notes, etc. We are about to download v6 and want to finally go paperless. In order to get maximum benefit from AC, including sending and receiving efaxes, scanning and storing documents as imported items, wireless communication in the office, printing to multiple printers, and accessing AC from home, is it better to step up to a server, or continue to simply use a good PC to house AC?

How many computers and other attachments do you have in your LAN?
How big is the hard drive on your current main computer? and how much memeory?
These are the main issues that will come into play. V6 is only slightly more of a memory hog than V5, but about the same. If you are going to go paperless you have to be sure of your backup systems.
You can search server and review long discussions about servers vs peer to peer. It would be worth reviewing these

Our "main" computer is a windows XP Pentium 4 2.8 GHz with 3 GB RAM and 150 GB hard drive, but we would most likely put in a more robust computer to host AC if we didn't go with a server.

The real issue is the number of other computers.
Peer to Peer can only handle 10 (or is it 20?) computers on an XP Pro system. I think that is 20 on Win7.
I use a similar peer to peer in one office Pentium 4 3.0 and 2.5G with a 500 GB drive. That system is 5.1 something. The other computers are pentium 2.4 to 3.0s running xp.
The other office is Windows Server Essentials 2011 with an Athlon quad core and 4 GB. Both run well. That is V.6 Most of the other computers are dual cores 1.86 with about 1.5 G memory, running Win XP. Moving to dual ocres made a huge difference for V6, I have not investigated the video card issue but that may truly be the answer.
I am holding off for "Government" money to upgrade both systems. I will probably keep the Server and move everything up to modern dual cores. I will probably put a server in the other office as well, might do windows home server and linux box.

Hi billfox,
A couple of things. First, if you want to have the best network, then don't go wireless.
Second, good posts on here, but if you want to read an entire book on the subject, I would do a search on here. There have to be 50 threads on here on this very subject.

I upgraded to V6 last week. It works well
We have XP Peer to Peer, wired, 6 computers
Probably server would be faster, but it is more expensive
