For those of you who would like to do voice to print in AC but do not want to pay the price for dragon I have been using a work around that is much more reasonable.
My OS is windows 7 and this comes with a built in Windows Speech Recognition which in of itself is not the greatest for medical dictation however I found from emicrophones some add on products to use with windows speech recognition along with medical vocabulary from Trigram Technologies, overall cost about $230 which is much less than dragon. Been using it for a few weeks now and find it very comparable to the previous ViaVoice that I previously used but is now not compatible with windows 7, hope it helps

Correction to above my cost for the WSR add-ons from eMicrophones and then the medical vocabulary from Trigram came to about $320 not $230, still much better than $1600 for Dragon

Koby,
I was excited to see your post about Windows 7 speech recognition. I am trying it out now and find that it works pretty well. Not sure it will save me time however. I find that it does goof up quite a few terms terms like "dyspnea", "substernal", "denies". But with training it seems to get better. When you correct its mistakes by saying "correct (the mistaken word or phrase)", then "spell it", then "d-y-s-u-r-i-a". However I had to train it to recognize dysuria about 6 times. Does the medical dictionary from Trigram do a good enough job that it saves you time and you use it in clinical practice?
For that matter, does Dragon medical software work well enough in Amazing Charts such that is saves time and is usable?

Yes, Dragon works and is usable -- if you spend enough time to train it and yourself. Nothing beats a good transcriptionist!

The microphone is critical for accurate recognition, otherwise you mess up he and she, b and p, d and t, etc. -- and even now it frequently drops s's at the end of words. I have been doing this for about 6 months, and it just gets better and better. I use a Philips SpeechMike, which feels just like a dictaphone. I also have used a USB headset and more recently a Sennheiser bluetooth unit which is really comfortable and accurate, but is a pain to get paired with the Bluetooth on my laptop, and won't work at all under Win7 (works pretty well with XPPro on a T61).

I wish someone would give me a "medical" version to try it out, but I'm not ready to fork over another $1000 or so quite yet -- but with training, I have done fine with the standard V11. You can't dictate directly into AC on the same machine as Dragon, but you can use the Dragon Pad and cut and paste or else use Remote desktop on a second machine with Dragon on the local machine and AC on the remote.

My first post, so please bear with me. I am reading about using Windows speech recognition with AC. I have been frustrated as I found out Dragon would not allow direct speech to text without the professional (read:overpriced) version. I have been laboriously cutting and pasting.

I did get the Windows SR to work crudely for me in Word, but it would still not take directly into AC. Am I missing something?

I use the medical version. Have for years. Lump it in to rapid write off to the IRS and enjoy all your extra time (not spent trying to make something work like dragon medical) with your family, on your mower or weeding a garden, or raising mules or whatever else you enjoy. IMHO.

Jeff--
You are one of my favorite consultants! Don't let EMR and voice recognition frustrations get the best of you and make you throw up your hands and quit!

I have been working with Dragon (not the medical edition) for about a year, and it really works pretty well. The secret to making it work with AC is to use a second machine to access your server. Use Remote Desktop or LogMeIn to get to AC on the server, but use Dragon on the remote machine. (I use a laptop at a workstation in the office or at home.) There are a few quirks, but Dragon will type directly into the AC fields that way. You do have to have a pretty fast connection, or RemoteDesktop is unbearably slow. Should be no problem in Portland.

Voice recognition depends heavily on the proper microphone -- I mostly use Philips SpeechMikePro. Recognition accuracy suffers with other mikes (at least for me.)

Tom and Tom

Thanks for the advice. I have Dragon pretty well tamed to my weird niche practice (otoneurology) and bizarre consults (thanks Tom in Astoria) so I suspect the medical version would not help much even if it did work in AC. The advice about the lawn is also helpful as I just got a new John Deere riding lawnmower with a cup holder. I will try the workaround Tom in Astoria uses but it may take a while to get this as I may have a different system. AC is on the server, Dragon is on my desktop at work and I access my desktop from home.

Run a terminal service on the server (others can still use the AC database)and remote to it from your office desktop or from home. Dragon will allow you to install on two machines -- home and desktop. The Dragon will then print directly into the image of the terminal on your server machine.
