This is interesting reading from NEJM: Hospitals? Race to Employ Physicians ? The Logic Behind a Money-Losing PropositionA couple of my favorite quotes: "Today, aggressive hiring of PCPs is returning, in part because hospitals fear physicians? becoming competitors by aggregating into larger integrated groups that direct referrals and utilization to their own advantage." "the option of reverting to independent practice later may be far less attractive in the future. Employment choices that physicians make today may not be able to be undone."

I get the same slimy feel talking to my local hospital administrators that I get from a used car salesman. The thought of working for or even partnering with them makes me shudder.

this was a helpful article. Our office was recently offered an employed position as well but offer was quickly declined.

Good article. I know that I have personally referred multiple millions of dollars worth of patient care to our two local hospitals (ED visits, inpatient admits, labs, imaging services, out patient procedures (colonoscopy, etc) and a base of surgical patients for our local surgeons to operate on).
I have no future plans to ever sell out to the hospital-based model. If forced to however, I would hope they keep in mind how much I've referred to them over the years.
I currently provide them a revenue source with no attached overhead.

Adam, based on my dealings with Banner Health, they might send out for Subway instead of McDonalds for the lunch meeting where you sign over your documents and your life, but not likely much more. Unless you are bringing them a new cath lab, they don't consider FP of much value. $100K looks like big money to us; to them, it is a rounding error.
