I've tried different power settings for the "server" running Windows 7. So far the stable setting is for the computer to always be on and the hard drive on all the time. To me, this shorten the life of the server considerably, I mean the hard drive will burn out in 2 to 5 years.

So, what is the best power setting for the server without having problems?

If you are willing to live with some latency after power-down, you can set the drive power-down for 30 minutes - usually you will be hitting the drive more often than that during the day, and it will power-down over-night & weekends.

From experience, a UPS that will shut the machine down over power problems/power loss will do more to length the service life of your 'server', than powering down the drive.
