Preauthorizations are killing my office staff. It would be nice to be able to export the demographics (at least), icd 9 codes into different preauthorization forms (different insurances have different forms for the same things) to help lessen the pain. Also to have a record (not a piece of paper that then needs to be scanned) in the chart immediately would be nice. This could also be used as a template for other preauthorizations/recurrent reauthorizations for even quicker completion.

Any suggestions or solutions that anyone are using already?

I could see something like this would work out well. Perhaps being able to put information into forms by typing in something like %FNAME %LNAME %ADDRESS %INSURANCE %DOB to assigned fields that is scanned in will work well.

I have the same issues with referral forms to specialists. There is a separate form for each specialist and their offices are stubborn and won't accept the wonderful ORDER forms that has all the information required to refer a patient.

Pre-auths are getting worse here in NY. HIP of NY (a big insurer here) is now requiring pre-auths for echocardiograms. At this rate I think next they may require a pre-auth for PFTs and EKGs.

I could go on and on about pre-auths - managed care is the worse. Even Medicaid now wants a pre-auth to do A1c's (I use the A1c Now). Often times, when pts are not required to have a referral, offices still want them, and they don't want the pts making their own appts...but us! (okay...rant off)

I do have a standard form that I use for all specialists that seems to work well. We attached to it demographics and chart notes/lab/imaging reports etc.

Roy,

How exactly is that done what you mention?

Rainy,

Do you scan in the form after filling it out by hand?

Mikael,

When we make our templates, we can customize using %FNAME %LNAME %AGE in our template. It works really well (although I would like to see more entries). Try making a template (cut and paste this one)

%FNAME %LNAME is a %AGE year old

I use this in every note at the beginning because it seems more personalized and professional. I think it would be nifty if we can use these keywords in other arenas. I think it would be nice to have:

%SEX
%ADDRESS
%PHARMACY
%DOB
etc. I suspect if you can do this to names, adding codes for other fields would be easy... but what do I know about programming.

Roy,

Thanks. This will be helpful. How do you think I can insert this type of template information into a preauthorization form? Would you need to scan it in as a word/fillable pdf form file?

You can't at this time. Template information can be enclosed in an order form.
