often send same group of orders for certain encounters -
new diabetic, follow up diabetes, physical exam wellness visit - etc

is it possible to prepare sets of orders/labs?

if not would really be nice... and efficient

I second that.

I used the custom tab for that for a while until I realized that it only saves "custom order", not what you actually wrote-does show up most of the time in the progress note.

It would be helpful if we could make large templates there that would show up in the order section. Right now, the size of the templates are limited to a specific number of spaces.

Although we are looking more flexibility in the future, we are enjoying the orders section and finding it very helpful.

Again-would love to be able to sort and group orders by type and or date.

How many more spaces do you need? I can enter 40, 50, 60 labs. Whatever.

I have lots of individual labs, but would like to be able to order them all under one tab. I am going to go count and see how many spaces I can enter.

Bert ... can't visit the user board every night ...I am interested in utilizing the order function better and appreciate vicki's and your input.

I have created orders within the other tab - mostly referrals to specialist but will try placing lab sets there as well. I have to send them to myself or staff in order to have it appear on the note. Problem is reproducing it later when ... Doc, would you send again the labs and referral you gave 3 months ago ...phone call comes in.

thanks

I completely agree. I think we are all finding the best work flow when it comes to labs, xray and orders, etc. But, you are right, you can send them to yourself.

I would really like to see a "save to chart" button in the orders section. Instead of the process of sending the order to yourself (and then deleting the message containing the order), one click to "save to note" would be nice.
The same is true in the messages section.

Is it worth submitting this as a wish?

There is already a button that lets you save to chart and it does not go to your mailbox. Look in lower right.

Thank you Steven! I have no idea how I overlooked that.

You know, every time I went to write an order, it would ask me to select a recipient (the "Send selected orders to" box was blank and needed to be filled) before I could order something OR save it to the chart. Now it looks like it fills in a staff person (the last one I used for that type of order?) so I don't have to select one. Am I crazy, or is that something new?

So now that you saved me clicks with orders, how about with messages? Let's say I get a message from my staff (e.g., Mrs. X called with a question). I message back ("call and set up an appointment"). I want to save my message to the chart. The only way I know how to do that is reply and cc myself, send the message, delete the incoming message, save the message I sent to the chart, and finally, delete the cc'd message.
That sounds like a crazy sequence; everytime I do it, I think there must be a better way. I guess what I am talking about is sending a message AND saving it to the chart at the same time. Any ideas or did I lose you completely?

I do not believe you can do this, but I actually send the message to my staff and when they do this it is messaged back to me and I then hit save. Here is what I do:

1) Message from pt - What do I take for my _____?
2) I receive and send message back - please bring all of your medicines in and we will go over this.....send to staff.
3) They call pt. relay the message and then send to me that pt. notified and made appt.
4) I hit save to chart.

At present this is how i do it:

CLick "Write Orders" button or select the "Orders and Requisitions" option from a patient chart

1. select "Other" tab
2. right click in the "Free Text Orders" Box to insert your template

or to create a template

3. selecte "Add/Edit Templates" on the right in the order section
4. hit the "Add New" button - name it, e.g. "Rheumatoid Panel" list the labs you like and save it. You now have a Rheumatoid Panel with labs available as a template for future use.

hope this helps

That is how I am doing order sets, as well.

Gino,
Did you see Steven's answer above to me....it addresses your point ("I have to send them to myself or staff in order to have it appear on the note."). You don't have to do that, just click the button at the bottom to "save without sending".

Really like the idea of the templates in the other tab.
Didn't know that was possible.
Didn't know about the save to chart button either.
Thanks everyone

Ok thanks for all of the above we are already using custom orders but after they are saved is there a way to view the details of the custom order. In the chart it is listed only as a custom order but I can not tell which one of the custom orders it is.

MoeJoe, Not exactly sure what you mean here.
1. If you save the order as a template in the "Other" section ("Free text orders"), you click "move to chart".
2. The order shows in the box on the left, then you click "ADD" at the bottom.
3. Then you have two choices: send the order or save to chart without sending.
With either of those choices, the words "Custom Order" appear in the chart, followed by the text of the order itself.

What is missing?
